The coaching process addresses specific personal projects, business successes, general conditions and transitions in the client’s personal life, relationships or profession by examining what is going on right now, discovering what your obstacles or challenges might be, and choosing a course of action to make your life be what you want it to be. The coaching covers the wide span of life issues of individuals and groups.
Training tells individuals what to do in certain circumstances whereas coaching evokes thoughts and actions to choose what he/she feels best to do.
Mentoring often has some elements of coaching but the difference in that the mentor is subject matter experts and offers guidance based on their experience. If you get told what to do or how to solve a problem then it is not coaching.
If you are the one who is seeking progress and want to explore new dimensions in your life and the most important thing is that “ are you willing to take ownership of your own self?” Then coaching will be a support to you in bringing transformation. As transformation starts with a change – whether it is changing or creating a habit or behavior, improving your work-life balance, changing your career, improving your relationships, being more creative at work, etc. Your readiness to take steps to achieve it will bring results from coaching.
The term “coach” is used broadly. This profession demands a high level of confidentiality, code of conduct, and ethics. The skill to deal with human behavior and the potential required a great level of training. So it’s important to choose wisely. An ICF Credentialed coach has completed stringent education and experience requirements and has demonstrated a strong commitment to excellence in coaching. They have fulfilled coach-specific training, achieved a designated number of experience hours, and have worked with a coach themselves. Certified coaches have made it through this filtering process, demonstrating an earnest commitment to high coaching standards.
Counseling generally aims to solve problems by understanding what happened in the past. Coaching is almost exclusively future-focused.
Coaching is to help you grow without telling you what to do. The process believes in your potential and aims to empower you and to connect you to your own resourcefulness. A solution-focused approach is not meant for the coach to provide the solutions but for the coachee to find what works best for them.
The coach and coachee relationship are of partnership towards the goal which coachee wants to achieve. Hence basic responsibility is of commitment.
For a coach: Maintaining the confidentiality, trust, open and direct communication, reflecting the emotions, feelings and the words, challenging the current state of the client and If requires, access own intuition to evoke awareness are the prime responsibilities.
For a client: Determination to work on designed actions and open up all the strengths or faced shortcomings with the intent to achieve the goal, considered as the client’s responsibilities.
Most of my coaching is done virtually, by audio/videoconference or by phone, which makes coaching sessions more accessible and flexible to fit your schedule and accommodate various time zones, wherever you are in the world.
