Namaste!, WOULD YOU LIKE TO BELL, THE BELL?
Workplaces have stressed speed and cost effectiveness over the last two decades. Whether in the manufacturing or service sectors, employers prefer a “multi-skilled” workforce over trade/craft-specific talents. I am a big proponent of Lean management. In the context of information and decision making, it is more appropriate to express horizontal span than vertical span. Presenting “Team Working” in an engaging approach by emphasizing the importance of delegation, empowerment, and collaborative growth.
Without a doubt, in today’s global economic race, with so much atomization and artificial intelligence, human skills must be upgraded as an effective growth resource.
The focus is on evaluating the effectiveness/performance of this resource (human resource). As of today, organizations are ringing “THE BELL”. The bell curve is also referred to as stacked ranking, forced ranking, rank, and yank, as well as the vitality model’s “20-70-10” (Top, Average, Poor performer).
A brief introduction: Statistically, the normal distribution curve, also called the Bell curve, is:
1. The average or mean of the curve is always found in the center.
2. The bell curve contains only one mode or peak.
3. Its standard deviation is predictable.
4. It is symmetrical, which means that half of the data is on the left side and the other half is on the right side of the bell.
When scaling human resources for multiskilling or a shared project, the project loses its mass identity and becomes more individual. Then how does one calculate the Average? We need all Apples to become cruel.
Democratic thinkers frequently coin the terms KRA, KPI, or BSC (balanced scorecards). The spirit of all of these words encourages collaborative efforts to bring about change while being cost-effective. Surprisingly, lands on Despotism for examination.
Unknowingly, we are minimizing efforts to improve skills and motivation to study and perform. This drive is simply linked to social status, identity, and financial security.
I hope you’re connecting the dots and thinking about inventing some new methods or philosophy to address the current shift toward horizontal and lean hierarchy.
I am open to discussion and recommendations for creating a melody with an orchestra rather than a bell. Do you? Kindly share.
